We have a shallow well and a family member thinks it might be drying up.The pump is cavitating and we have just replaced the pump, check valve ,the water filter, the pressure gauge and reran the piping from pump to tank. The tank is holding pressure it reads 27 when checked with a tire gauge. When we moved the pressure gauge to the other side of the pump it shows a dramatic drop it pressure as it cavitates, and also when the pump turns off. We also checked the house for any leaky pipes, and found nothing. We don't know what else to do....Is there anything you could recommend we try before having to foot a $3,000.00 bill to have a deep well put in???
Any knowledge you have will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for your time.

You might try using some NuWell tablets to clean your well so it has more water available to the pump. Here is a link, but you should be able to find them locally:

You will need a separate water source to help get the pellets down into the well, an overnight cap for the well so the chemical will be forced all the way down and out through the screen, and a pitcher pump for clearing the well before re-connecting your regular pump after everything else has been done.

    Cavitation!

Cavitation usually indicates a plugged well or a lift problem. Best to get a trusted and qualified pump man to check it out.

i've had this happen, make sure your new check valve isn't stuck shut, check water depth in your stand pipe with tape, if you have water bolt it up & prime the pump. good luck.

    Gary Slusser That's all folks!

Where is the water filter? If it is between the well and the pump, assuming a jet pump, remove it or at least the cartridge and see what happens. If a jet pump, where is the check valve you mention? If on teh inlet to the pump, remove it, you can't prime the line from the pump back to the foot valve on the end of the drop pipe through a check valve.

How do you know the pump is cavitating?

Otherwise check the water level in the well.
