Asphalt Roll Roofing Project

I need to repair a large section of the roof on a large storage shed. They don't have the money to have me remove the old roofing down to the bare wood, tack on new felt, and then nail in the new roofing. I'm just going to add asphalt roll roofing over asphalt roll roofing.

Is it best to just start at the bottom of the roof and then work my way up by overlapping each sheet by a few inches?

Any tips on troweling on the asphalt cement to cover the seams and exposed nails?

I suggest that you look at some material on the proper way to do it. Most of the roll roofing I have seen on barns and other roofs that are not flat does not have asphalt on the nail lines.

Look especially at the last Atlasroofing link above.

Roll roofing will last a long time if properly applied but it looks terrible if you make a mistake. Shingles are a lot more forgiving from an appearance point of view.

Applying heavy roll roofing is not a one-man job. It is very difficult to get it properly aligned and nailed without bumps and humps.

If it is a low slope roof, under 3 in 12, I suggest running the roll roofing over the top and down the other side. That is, parallel to the gable not parallel to the eves. I seal the overlap with roofing tar. For extra waterproofing, after the job is done I seal the edges with silicon caulk.

Most residential Rolled Roofing such as is found a Low*s and HD has a life span of 5-10 years depending on the circumstances.
