I recently tried replacing my tub spout.
(My house was built in the 30s and maintained)
On the back side of this spout it is threaded.
Have you seen this type of attachment between pipe and spout?
BTW flange won't come off. I'm afraid to force it. For fear it with break the pipe behind the wall.

It unscrews from the pipe in the wall, but there is no way we can tell you if the pipe will break or not, and might not be able to until we tried to remove it, and it happened.

What is on the other side of the wall? Is it a closet? If it is then cut a square foot hole out through the wall so you can see or get to the back side of the fixture.
