Since the gas water heaters have problems, has anybody replaced it with a electric water heater. If so, how much was it for the changeover?... I know very little about electricity but I would imagine you would have to have a extra 30 amp circuit to connect to.

You certainly can do this, but your annual cost of operation is likely to jump considerably. Cannot say for sure without knowing your utility rates, but it would be rare that a gas WH was not less expensive to run than an electric one. Second, a typical NG fueled WH recovers MUCH faster than the typical electric, so for the same overall performance, you may need a bigger WH, which typically also has bigger standby losses. The cost to do this is too hard to WAG, as the distance from the panel, how hard it would be to run the new cable, and even if there is space and capacity in the existing panel would need to be known, and often, you'd have to be there.

What kind of problems do gas water heaters have ?
I have a Whirlpool that's going on 12 years old and if I don't clean the screen every 3-4 months the pilot light will go out. I use a refridgerator brush and a mirror to clean the screen underneath it. Takes 5 minutes, but if you forget, you always run out of hot water when in the shower!...... Hard to believe but it seems like all the new gas water heaters now are having this problem with not getting enough air.

Most of those problems are from improper installation, And the safeties are doing their job.

You can not put a Gas heater in a enclosed area.

12 years is not all that bad for a Whirlpool heater with a 10 year warranty. They timed it about perfect, They are getting better at that prediction.

Good Luck.
