The cast iron sewer pipes in our 1888 home have rusted out and are leaking in several places. Want to replace the main 4" sewer pipe and branches in the crawlspace. Will probably leave the 4" CI stack going to the second floor for now. Local code allows the use of ABS and PVC. Have heard pros and cons for both materials. Leaning towards PVC at the moment.

Terry, thanks for the recommendation for PVC. The hardware store had PVC schedule 40, but not in 4" which is a special order. They also had another white PVC in 4" called Drain and Sewer pipe which seemed less substantial. They said the two are not interchangeable. Will go with the Schedule 40.
