It depends on if you want to pay for repairs when they happen or if you want to pay for them a little each month...

and if you have the initial cash out lay for the up front purchase...

also how long you may live in the home...

Owning is always better than renting for many many reasons. Security is one of the biggest.
Renting is like putting money in a pocket with big hole.

You pretty much have to project the total cost over the lifetime of the contract and how long you expect to stay in the home.

    softener

Few softeners have any problems during the first five year period, and when they do, it is usually more ecomonical to just replace it. That being the case, a new softener in six years or so will be much less than what you are showing for a rental fee.

$2000 for a 5 year old softener.... not financially smart IMO.

Much better is to buy online for like $650-$850 and install it yourself or hire a plumber to do it for a few hundred and when it needs a new part, buy it from many online or local dealers for like $50-$130 and install it yourself.

Anyone can rebuild a softener if they have the desire and a control valve service manual with parts breakdown. Autotrol, Clack, Erie and Fleck control valves all have one.
