We have to move our existing basement shower stall as it was so poorly installed and framed in. We have to remove the drain to get the stall out-how do we do this? The house was built in 1979. Looks like a brass ring with a rubber gasket. Do we need special tool, lots of $$$.... Thanks.

If you see a castellated nut, it is securing the rubber gasket. You could use a hammer and screwdriver to remove the nut. Then pry out the gasket, and the shower pan will lift up off the pipe. The drain fitting itself is secured by a large nut under the pan, so it does not come out until you have access underneath.

Jimbo-we are not sure if there is a castellated nut. Do we just pry out that brass ring? This is a fiberglass stall.

We think it is a lead and oakum joint-he scratched the top and there was lead. How do we remove the lead and oakum?
