We have a huge older model gas heater stove that is vented. I noticed today while I had the celing fan going, and had the heater on, when it would ignite, I would smell gas for a few seconds. Is this normal or a concern? What should I do? Ive never had gas heat and when I called the company, they acted like it was no big deal?

Call another company. Ask them to clean and check the unit for proper draft and perform a combustion test. This will eliminate 9 of 10 of the people you call but you will end up with a heating tech you can trust with your life.

What does it use as an ignitor? The more common choices are glow plug or sparker. With a glow plug, it waits for it to glow then turns on the gas, then verifies it lit. With a sparker, it starts the sparker at about the same time as it opens the gas valve. With an exhaust fan on, considering that the gas pressure is typically only about 0.5#, a draft could keep the gas away from the sparker or maybe even the glow plug for a moment.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
