Question about 1950's bathroom sink faucet

novice here. have bathroom sink on wall with hot and cold faucets which are horizontal, not vertical. attempting to replace washers. after exposing stem see it is screwed in. when attempting to unscrew (brass parts), can unscrew but then meet resistance. want to make sure I can apply force without breaking anything/screwing it up. thoughts? thanks.

Turn the stems to the open/on position. If that does not do it, post a photo.

If you get it apart, you probably want to replace the valve seats in addition to the washers.
