I'm using it to tile an old concrete basement stairwell and steps that were showing signs of wear.

They get a lot of rain water too.

For the first time, I am using a proper thinset mortar and sanded grout. I see why people prefer these to the ready mixed stuff (that can't be used outdoors anyway).

Is quarry tile good for external use? We use it in England and it seems to be the most appropriate stuff I can find here.

Quarry tile, at least what we call quarry tile hear...is a hard fired tile, so it can certainly be used outdoors. I have seen it on some restaurant patios, etc.

If you don't seal it, it may stain some, and if you do seal it, it becomes a little "slipperier when wet"!
