I had my kitchen remodeled. An inspector said that the remodeler had to use a 'mechanical' joint when connecting PVC to ABS, the remodeler initially wanted to use some kind of glue.

So I have this threaded connection now between PVC and ABS, but its leaking a little bit. Whats going on? Should it have been glued as the remodeler wanted?

You now have an S-trap that will siphon the p-trap. Add an AAV to break the siphon there.
What kind of inspectors do you have there they don't call you on those things? Not a plumbing inspector obviously.

What you have there is a trap adapter. We use those all the time. Those are installed without tape, and just snug up.

This picture shows the trap adapter with slip joint nut and slip joint washer.
Yours combines the washer and nut into one.

Terry is dead on about the S trap, but that is not what is causing the leak. I don't see any tape on the threaded connection, but if there is, that's wrong. My best guess is the PVC connection was not assembled correctly. And, no "glue" would not be use here.
