I am asking for information/pros & cons on installing a power anode in my hot water tank.
I have well water which is moderately hard and contains iron, hence red stains. I installed a water softener about ten years ago and have had no problems. I have two inline filters one which is a spun filter to remove any sediment (change monthly or by-monthly depending on how bad it looks) followed by a carbon filter which I try to change about every three months. I add chlorine to the well periodically.
I installed a new gas water heater earlier this year, read in the manual that if I have soft water I should change the magnesium anode (which of course I haven't done). I recently started having that rotten egg smell and have been reading on line and in these forms about soft water and hot water odors. I see that I should probably be using an aluminum alloy anode, but have seen health warnings and articles that say it won't help if using a water softener. I then read about using a power anode. I'm looking for advice before I make the purchase.
