I want to switch the fixtures BUT I am having a hard time finding what I need. The home was built in 1955, so it's a tough fix. I have three bathrooms with the same setup. I love it because I can run a bucket of water without running outside.

Start with CLR and some car wax. Replace washers and valve seats.

Want more? Replace the spout. Maybe you can find new knobs and escutcheons.

What do you think you feel the need for? Is the existing stuff functional enough?

Got easy access from the other side of that wall?

Some plumbers suggest using a spout in a shower only...most tub/shower valves will work just fine with one. If you want to update the guts and you do NOT have access from the back side, they do make remodel or repair plates that will cover the larger hole you'd need to change things out from the shower side. Almost every company makes one, and some in various finishes and shapes.
