A lot of light fixtures have this big pot metal nut that holds the globe on to the fixture. Cheap doesn't begin to describe how poorly designed and poorly made it is. It makes a basin wrench look like the inside of a Rolex. They cross thread easily, even halfway up the socket. Sometimes you get a free plastic tool with the fixture to help install the globes that are too small to get your big fat hands into.
I've found that a 1 1/2 in Fernco fitting makes a really good installation tool for those fixtures. The nut seats very nicely into the fernco and acts like a deep socket and allows you to screw the nut way up into the globe. When it gets close, rotate the fernco and the globe together to snug it up. Seems to work better than the free plastic tool. Remove the band clamp and angle the nut into the fitting.
