    What do you mean by "build your own drain".....are you talking the yard septic, the house dwv, or something local to the shower?

    "alternative methods caveat" would mean "beware" of them, or more precisely, beware of probems they could cause.

    I take that wording to allow wiggle room for ENGINEERED design solutions using materials not specifically listed by the AHJ. Around here, materials and fittings are listed and approved by IAMPO. In general, the AHJ takes that a final OK. I don't think John Q Schmuck Buttcrack can slap something together and convince anyone it is OK. They are going to want a signature on a plan, and the signature better say PE behind it.
