I'm using a fernco adapter on OLD CI.
60lb seems awfully tight. I actually cranked it to 60 and then backed the nut off a little bit....

Do you guys always crank it to 60lbs ?
Or just the plumbers feel - aka, judgement call

Don't confuse in-pounds with ft-pounds! Hopefully, that's not your issue. BUt, if it is, 60ftpd is WAY overtorqued.

Yeah, 60 ft lbs.

I'm just seeing the metal on rubber and it's looks-feels too tight IMO...
I know spec is a defined spec, but I suppose there is some fudge factor in the real world ?

THe spec IS in inch-pounds...60 ft-pounds is WAY too much.

If you use a No-Hub torque wrench it will disengage at the proper setting, and YES you do tighten it till the wrench clicks.

The lever arm on that tool isn't all that long, so it probably seems like a lot of torque.

It is not a lever arm, it is a "T" handle. IF it had a lever that would be for loosening the coupling's bands.
It's two lever arms around a central pivot, and, they're relatively short compared to say a typical torque wrench, which, if it was calibrated, could also be used. They are available in smaller sizes for in-pd uses.
