Hello,

This is a really weird one.

Had a house inlet supply pressure reducing water valve put in by the town
water Dept about a month ago.
They used the typical Watts one, and all is fine.
Body looks like it is a brass alloy of some sort, like they all do.

Today, I noticed the outside of the body has developed
a greyish-white, hard, coating on it.
Almost looks like an oxide of some sort, or an almost microscopic "pitting"

Location is dry.
No leaks or wetness on reducer surface, or around it.

Was wondering if anyone ever had anything like this ?

Thanks,
Bob

Can you post a picture of the PRV?
Could it leak occassionally and by the time you see it the valve body is dry?
Have you asked the municipality about the situation?

From OP

Hi Guys,

Thanks for help and thoughts.

Live outside of Boston

"Could it leak occassionally and by the time you see it the valve body is dry?"

Don't think so.

"Have you asked the municipality about the situation? "

Will be doing so.

Not an answer to your question, but when you talk to the water department about this white stuff, find out if this PRV has a built in bypass to accommodate thermal expansion. If it does not, you will need to install a thermal expansion tank. Perhaps you could get the city to do that for you since they took it upon themselves to put in the PRV.
