I just replaced my Mixet shower valve stem which became hard to adjust with an aftermarket product and it was lukewarm afterwards. I reinstalled the old stem and the temperature was fine. I took everything apart and noticed that the stem pieces were very loose but it took me a long time to figure out how to fix it since there are left and right threaded units that need to be tightened in the correct order.

Now that I did that I think you might be able to fix the temperature bypass problem on a replacement stem without taking anything apart. Try turning the water on and then turning the temperature control knob counter clockwise several times to tighten the pieces which are reverse threaded. The water on/off knob which moves the gasket away from the valve seat is right threaded but the temp. control is left threaded and may come loose when new. The temperature knob may turn but the valve control may not.

Of course I may have everything reversed but I'm sure people will let me know when it doesn't work!

There are only TWO Mixet stems and if yours goes in it has to be the correct one, otherwise it would be too long or too short. The temp control is NOT threaded. It slides in and is held by the large hex nut on the sleeve.

Are the pre and post 1968 cartridges interchangeable?

Use only the MS5ATC. The brass mixing head crossovers something terrible. It's hard to get only cold water thru the valve. Even in the cold position, hot water will creep thru. Get only the cartridges with the teflon head. They crossover considerably less. Spring check stops (MSPC) are still available as well, which will eliminate the crossover when the valve is off.

Looking for more info on the validity of this statement.
I am a plumber with 30yrs experience.
I Service a 5 story full of Mixit valves.
We use the stem with the brass end because we had several stems with Teflon end in our inventory
( unused for several years ) that were split/cracked.

Do these valves have a big cross flow problem between the hot and cold.
I can see how they would not cross over. Even with a Teflon end.
Thought maybe the spring check valves prevented that but some valves bodies I have seen online do not have the integral stops.
