Have a well with hard water, which leaves iron and other deposits that block toilet jets and leave the bowl looking stained/dirty. Yes, the water is (string) filtered. Can anyone recommend a good dual flush toilet that can accommodate iron and other mineral scale, either due to size of ports, surface material or both?

For what it's worth: Of the two toilets in the house, a 20+ year old UPC brand toilet has always worked well, but is badly stained. A 12 year old Kohler is both stained and has had problems with blocked ports/poor flush since within a year or two of installation. Local plumbers have not offered any solutions. Due to the sensitive ecology of our location, heavy duty water treatments and the 'nastier' scale removers are not really options.

Many thanks.

I would pick up a TOTO CST454CUFG 1.0 Gallon flush toilet.

CEFIONTECT (CeFiONtect) bowl finish, dual cyclone rinse.
The rinse comes from two large jets at the top of the bowl that send water swinging around the bowl.
You will likely still get some iron deposits near the lower part of the trap that will need cleaning with a brush and at the rinse outlets.
But it's doubtful that those three openings are going to get blocked ever.

And example of their 1.28 gallon flush with a similar bowl rinse.

Because you're in MA, you need to check the Massachusetts plumbing approval list before you choose any product. The inspectors can be quite strict. Many Toto toilets are on the list, but not all (probably because nobody has asked to have them verified and included). If you do a search, you can find that website and look up stuff on their database to verify it is okay to use.

That was a GREAT recommendation, Terry. THANK YOU. The TOTO CST454CUFG 1.0 Gallon flush toilet has been installed since August. Works great, no clogging. No smear marks. Bowl stays clean. Scale is removed easily with CLR.

A house guest even commented, unprompted, on what a great toilet it was. --Can't say that's ever happened before...

Congratulations on meeting your objectives with the toilet. You might try Super Iron Out crystals to supplement your CLR. It is good for the red iron stains.

You might read through the Water Softener Forum, where iron filtering discussions are often done. Do a search for iron in that forum.

Note that many solutions are on the order of $1000.

Thanks for the update on that.
In the Seattle area, you might even be able to get a rebate for installing one, depending on the water district you are in. :)
