My bathroom vanity has a bronze elbow with a threaded nut (not sure if it's compression or what). The tailpiece from the P-Trap just slides in (it's loose) and leaks sometimes. Is there a best-practice solution for this?

If the tailpiece slides in n out, open the nut to see if you have a slip washer and that it's in the right position and to check the thread, clean the tailpiece, then tighten the nut.
If still leaking, replace the nut and washer.

The slip washer is a tapered design that gets shoved against the outside of the pipe as you tighten up the nut to make the seal. The OD of the pipe should be clean to help ensure a good seal and the washer must have the taper going away from the nut to work properly (the wider end is pushed by the nut, not the tapered edge).
