We've had an intermittent leak from our shower for about a year. It was only happening maybe once every few months and the plumber couldn't find the source. I recaulked everything and replaced missing grout. (The previous owners left some tile spacers in and grouted over them. I pulled them and grouted the holes.) I also sealed the grout and did some testing to isolate the problem to the drain assembly. I put silicone caulk around the pipe which stopped the leaking temporarily. It detached and the ceiling leaked again. I'd cut a hole in the ceiling, but it's textured and I don't want to pull all of the texture down in 2 rooms.

I think the drain pipe is only connected by a rubber washer. I tried to pull up the washer, but it's in there pretty well. How do I remove the metal drain? If I get it out, can I install a drain from the top down?

You might be able to just replace the gasket:
https://www.fernco.ca/plumbing/residential-plumbing/shower-drain-connectors
Exclusive Wedge-Lok® Seal:

Here are two shower drains that can be inserted from the top

Thanks. I'm just having trouble ripping out the gasket. I think it's glued in there with something, or held in by the metal portion of the drain. Is it possible that it's a rubber hose?

I think it is simular to the fernco shower drain connector in the link I provided. They are hard rubber that are wedged tightly into place.

You might be able to tighten it up and stop the leak if the gasket is still good, I don't know if that would work or not.

Gotcha. Thanks. The gasket was ripped up before I started pulling it. I'll just work on a section until I cut it in half and then pull the edge up.
