I removed the drain plug from our kohler cast-iron tub "tea for two" to clean the drain, etc., and, for the life of me, I cannot re-install the plug so it "seats" as before. Can anyone offer advice on how to re-install my plug into the drain?

Hard to explain, but you should be able to get it installed by fiddling and jiggling. The flat part of the operating lever should face upwards when it is installed. Look at www.kohler.com - they have installation instructions, and maybe you can find the product that is similar to the one you have.
