Purchased a house with an old Hellenbrand WM2-IC-10 iron filter. It has the aeration tank and the filter tank with a Fleck 2500 valve I believe. I'm on a very limited budget, so I have dumped the old media and want media suggestions which will not require regeneration since I'm not set up for it. I have sulfur odor as well as iron. Will this valve take care of my needs just by backwashing, and should I use the aeration tank since its there?
I appreciate any suggestions that can help, as I said, budget is limited.

It really depends on your water chemistry but... most of the time Katalox Light can be used in place of most iron reduction medias with great success. It is not a cheap media, but it is one of the best medias available.

From what I can tell, that is a 10 inch diameter tank. KL would want a 7 to 9 GPM backwash depending on water temperature. In the Peoria area, I would think 7 GPM would be best, but maybe 8 would be better. http://www.softenerparts.com/Fleck_5600_Valve_and_Parts_s/30.htm has a link to a manual. It is the DLFC that sets the backwash rate. I am not sure, but I suspect that DLFC button would be this one: http://www.softenerparts.com/DLFC_Button_7_0_gpm_p/3412408.htm

Here is my reading from the graph in the KL documentation that I have seen:
Katalox Light requires more backwash GPM than a softener of similar size

Katalox Light requires more backwash GPM than a softener of similar size. 30% bed expansion is good. A little more than that would also be good, as long as you don't get to 50% bed expansion.
With a 10 inch diameter tank, you would need backwash GPM to get 25% or 30% bed expansion:

Backwash water
temp C: , 10 , 20 , 30
temp F: , 50 , 68 , 86

GPM (30%): , 5.6 , 7.1 , 8.7
GPM (25%): , 4.4 , 6.4 , 7.1

Pretend the above info is in a table. I may have made a mistake. I am not a pro.
