Installing new vanity

Help....novice in the matters of plumbing
I replaced my pedelstal vanity with a new vessel sink vanity
and the P trap doesnt fit (see pic below)
I have been advised to cut the existing pipe from the wall with a hacksaw and attach the new P trap to it
suggestions....ideas

much appreciated

Behind that chrome trim ring I believe you will find a nut to loosen which will allow you to remove the trap arm from the wall.

You have just discovered one of the first "laws" of plumbing, namely, that the drain NEVER fits when you change sinks. There should be a slip nut under that chrome cover, but it could be connected without one, which would make it more difficult and possible require a plumber to avoid a major problem if you were to break something.
