I want to build wooden baseboard covers. Drawbacks?Are metal designed to throw heat?

Would be best if you can provide a pic or diagram of what you want to do.

All heating really likes a natural path of convection. It'll work best if you leave a lot of space for the cold air to be sucked from the floor, and expelled thru somewhere up.

Many folks cover up radiators with fancy woodwork, you can do whatever you want really, even designs that are not efficient.

Just make sure whatever you build can be removed if service is ever required.
