Arg.... need to replace this diverter valve.. put up with it a long while as it did not leak behind the tile but now the sleeve is shot. The packing nut(?) is the problem. I have tried wrenches (useless as the tile is too close) and a few sockets but it does not budge and I've already nicked it a bit. A neighbor gave me a shower valve socket but it is too big. Is there something special about that nut size wise? I really don't want to bust the tile to get a wrench on it properly and I'm not even sure it would work. Thanks for any advice.

You can often find deep socket sets that are designed for plumbing that aren't very expensive.

is an example. Not something you'd use to repair your car, but makes something like this task easier.

Probably does NOT have the one you want, or if it is the correct size too loose to work They are not designed to be an "exact fit" which is why they are six sided. Get a mechanic's deep socket, or a shallow one, let the push button come through the opening and then turn the socket with a pair of pliers or a wrench.

So.. I got the damn thing off. If anyone else is looking, this worked http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FHBHGE if anyone else is looking.

Ok so .. whats left of the old one will screw in. The replacement part I have will not thread in. I've now looked with glass and magnifier and I think the threads may be slightly different. The old one is also made of brass the new one I guess is alumninum or something.

Would there be any difference between http://www.amazon.com/BrassCraft-SL0160-Faucets-Diverter-Applications/dp/B000BQUG5M (the part that will not thread) and http://www.amazon.com/Faucet-RP5649-Button-Diverter-Assembly/dp/B00084XFIC ??

So frustrating..
