Unless it's a large enough leak to make one part of the yard soggy, I don't know of an easy way for you to locate it that doesn't involve random digging. Having said that, there are leak detecting companies that are usually able to find a leak. I had a leak in my yard irrigation supply line last year and called several companies. The ones I talked with use ultra-sensitive sound detection equipment or inject gas in the line that can be detected when it migrates up through the ground. The cost was in the range of $400-$500 in my area. Some of them guarantee for a fixed amount they will find the leak or not charge you. Fortunately or unfortunately, my leak became catastrophic right before I hired someone and an hour of digging in the squishy area of my yard where I knew the line ran uncovered the leak.

quote; Find someone with hydrophones

Call a leak detection specialist, NOT a plumber with a stethoscope or hydrophone. A specialist will have MANY more methods of pinpointing the leak than just listening for its sound.

A good one can be quite accurate in their location of a leak. My sister works for a municipal water company, and early in her career, she did that (probably easier with large supply lines than smaller ones), but she earned a good reputation from the construction guys, since they never had to dig huge holes to access the leak. You need someone with experience and the right tools.

Also, keep in mind, unless you can find a good reason why it leaked, you may be in the situation where the pipe is failing, and there may be (many) more leaks in your future unless you replace it. If it was because of a faulty joint or a rock or something obvious, then that isn't a big concern. A pinhole for no obvious reason would throw up a big red flag to me, but then, I'm not a pro at this.
