How strong should the suction be on a properly working pump?

I have a 1/3 hp shallow well pump. I have about 2 feet of pipe attached to intake hole with a check valve at the end. Then about six more inches of pipe after check valve. I prime the pump and turn it on. I hold my hand over end of pipe to feel suction. Barely anything. Shouldn't it be stronger? I was thinking like a shop vac or more? Thinking might need to replace impeller?

It should be pretty strong, but your hand and the end of the pipe would both need to be underwater to test that so you don't lose prime instantly.
