Hot Water Tank

My hot water line is leaking can you put a cutoff valve in the hotwater line an shut it off but still have cold water to flush the toilet and to mention it is Sunday morning.Any advice would be helpful.

There should already be a shut-off on the cold line feeding the water heater, just above the tank. Using single lever faucets may backfeed water into the hot water lines, so avoid doing that after you turn it off.
