This drain arm is held in place by a slip washer and a nut. Get a different slip washer than you have in the HD photo.
Make sure you have a washer (shaped like a cone, with the wide side up and the narrower side down), then tighten by hand and use a wrench to tighten more. Don't over tighten.
Another idea: support the arm from below with a piece of 2x4 cut to size.

Thanks, I like the idea of using another slip washer since my parents have a lot of stuff in the cabinet. I would like to go for the route of another slip washer than get a support underneath.

are you referring to this cone washer?

Those don't look right (maybe its the photo).
They look more like in this photo http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-5-in-Plastic-Repair-J-Trap-Kit-C2661C/205153744
I would switch that section over to a metal/brass waste arm. It will tighten better and usually has better seals. Maybe something like http://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt...lip-Tubular-Waste-Arm-Trap-C2137C-2/205154263

Most likely it is 1-1/2" pipe under your sink.

Thanks, I am looking into the metal/brass waste arm option. This is a good idea.
