    Hello,
I have an Empire gas heater (stand alone unit). There is an aluminum fitting that is about 1.5" below the real pilot orifice. There is a machine made (not corrosion made) hole in the fitting. The fitting is part of the pilot gas supply tube. This hole in this fitting is emitting gas and lighting (acting like a second pilot).

Is this hole serving some purpose and why is it lighting? One theory I have is that not enough gas is getting to the real pilot orifice, but I still don't know the function of the opening.

    Thanks for any insight.

Sounds like you are talking about the hole that adds the correct amount of air to get a clean flame.

If it is burning from there then you may have a restriction in the pilot orifice.

That sounds like a good possibility. Will the pilot need to be disassembled to be cleaned?

Before you rush to disassemble the pilot, I think you ought to call Empire and ask them this question.

If you disassemble and then re-assemble the pilot assembly in order to clean the orifice, you may create a new problem of misalignment.

Yes, I decided not to disassemble it. I will talk to Empire about it.
