Am about to install a new Rheem Platinum gas WH to replace my 40 gal 1988 (!) unit, which has recently started leaking. I believe the new unit has integral heat traps (there is plastic inside the metal nipples). The manual says "some water heaters have been supplied with[...]heat traps. These heat traps *may* require a minimum of one 90', 3/4" NPT elbow [+ other fittings], depending on your installation needs."
The diagram shows the pipes exiting horizontally, dropping 6", and then continuing horizontally. The pipes on my unit will be exiting vertically, rising 24" or so before turning. How do I need to plumb the lines?
