Just bought 10 acres of land in Northern Arizona up past Williams. I am wanting to put in a water system for a 1000 square foot cabin we plan to build. I'd like to have a 5000 to 6000 gallon tank. The water haul facility is about 1 mile away.

My questions are:

1. What material is best? Plastic, metal or concrete tanks? above ground or below?
2. What all do I need to make for a complete system? I am guessing a pressurized tank of some sort and a water pump?
3. What is the best way to keep the tank water from freezing in the winter? is there a tank heater?

I would love to hear from anyone who currently does water haul. I'd like to know about the costs of a system such as this. I have already priced water tanks in plastic, metal and concrete, just need to know what other pieces and parts are needed and a rough estimate on price.

Thank you!

You will need a set up similar to the following picture, except that you don't have the well to supply water to the tank. Best way to keep things from freezing is to build an insulated and heated well house. It is not the tank that will freeze. It is the pump and the small pipes coming out of the pump that will freeze.
