The hardware stores near me don't seem to sell halogen lamps anymore. Are they illegal to sell in certain states because of fire hazard concerns, or are the stores near me just not selling them?

Thank you

Incandescent lights are being phased out for efficiency issues.

There are hologen lamps being sold only if they meet a certain efficiency. Here is an example. They're a 75 watt equivalent but uses 0nly 53 watts. http://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-75-Wa...-Light-Bulb-2-Pack-53PARHIR-8KF25T2/203504848

Here is a typical A-lamp that is a halogen. http://www.homedepot.com/p/EcoVanta...-Long-Life-Light-Bulb-4-Pack-457374/206111398

To get the government efficiency requirements the halogen type burn at a higher temp and they get very hot. Also they are expensive and they are getting harder to find because LED equivalents are coming down in price, uses less power and in some situations, you cannot tell the difference between a LED and an incandescent. However, LED "spot light" lamps are not as good as the halogen spot light but a LED flood light are as good or better.

The lighting standards, which phased in from 2012-2014, do not ban incandescent or any specific bulb type; they say that bulbs need to use about 25% less energy.

Halogen's were nice and bright when they were invented, but they run too hot and LED has finally been around enough to replace them.

If you really want halogens, you'll have to resort to mail order like online or local flea markets. There are always hoarders, and folks that resell their used halogens.
