I recently removed a Goulds J5 jet pump from service based on the following symptoms:
1) The needle on the pressure gauge T'ed into the suction line was bouncing wildly while pumping.
2) The pump struggled to create 30 psi of pressure.
3) The noise during pumping was ominous. It sounded like the buzzing noise a motor makes when it is locked, in concert with the sound a jet pump makes while trying to build pressure during repriming.

With the pump being in service since 1994, replacement was an easy decision. I disassembled the pump and would appreciate the comments of those who know well pumps.

A couple of pieces of relevant info to accompany the photos:
1) There is no perceptible slop along any axis of the pump shaft and it turns freely.
2) Very finely textured black deposits would form in the pump head to the point that I thought the priming plug was covering a false port the first time I had to prime it.
3) The pump sat for a few days before I disassembled it. Also, over the past few years, I have fixed two suction pipe leaks and one pressure pipe leak that persisted for a few months before they were fixed. I mention this because I have read that dissolved iron comes out of solution when exposed to oxygen.

Doesn't really look that bad. I'll bet you had another suction leak and the noise was cavitation, which sounds like pumping gravel. The jet nozzle could also be clogged with the debris, which will keep the pump from building more than 20-30 PSI.
