To join pvc and/or copper. Sharkbite push fittings are form of compression fitting, too, so pex as well.

The hassle with adding a galvanized coat to anything is that it often isn't perfectly smooth which makes a compression seal problematic. The hassle with threaded fittings is that the act of tightening them down can compromise the coating, leading to exposed steel or iron, which will then rust. IMHO, galvanized stuff, while cheaper than some alternatives, often ends up costing more in the long run since it needs to be replaced more often.

Galvanized pipes, fittings and other components used to keep plumbers in business.

These days, with copper and PEX, plumbers are more creative, for example, by raising their hourly rates.

It simply has a galvanized finish.

Actually no, they ARE for connecting galvanized pipe; you can go to the depot and they have compression couplings for galvanized pipe. You can also use PVC compression couplings on galvanized, but it's probably not a good idea, but I've seen it working.

It is for galvanized pipe. If it isn't used underground be sure the pipe is strapped in such a way that it can't pop apart.
