I am looking for a recommendation for filtration of well water with the following characteristics: pH 6.8-7.0, Iron .2 ppm, Alkalinity 120 ppm, Hardness 7 grains/gal, Iron bacteria 500 cfu/mL. I have 2 1/2 baths, 4 people in the house. Flow rate is 10 gal/min. The problem arose when I noticed a brown ring in the toilet bowl. The tank had a bunch of black slime in it. I am about to move into this new house and want to make sure I have good water to shower, wash clothes and drink. A plumber has recommended I install a chemical injection system to chlorinate the water and raise the pH and follow that with a filter to remove the iron, chlorine and other impurities. I would like a second opinion.

Your iron is pretty low. That injection system should be very effective, but it may be more than you need.

Iron bacteria could be treated by annual well shocking. The method I will use next is described at http://www.moravecwaterwells.com/ and click Disinfection in the upper right. Because my iron is 4 PPM, I have a Centaur Carbon backwashing filter as a whole house filter. It is good for iron and sulfur. My pH is higher than yours, so that may affect things significantly.

Your iron could probably be dealt with with a water softener. Search for "Iron Out" on this forum for consideratons. If you already have a softener and it is not removing that iron effectively, you would need to clean your resin. You may need to regen more often.

There have been other good discussions.

What kind of cost is the proposed solution?

What water test did you have done? You don't often see people post their iron bacteria CFU number.

The recommendation sounds good, you should include some sort of contact tank. What is your current system like? Well pump, pressure tank, booster? Atmospheric storage? Etc... Any water treatment at all currently on site?
