Hi,
i am re-doing my kitchen and adding a new sink and garbage disposal. I just opened up the sink cabinet and see a lot of mixtures of metal - which i always assumed was not a good thing to pair.

the sink drains through the disposal (which is then output into a black plastic/pvc pipe) and then through a stainless trap which is connected to a copper pipe and then down into my basement which is then tied into the main vent/stack which is pvc!

Is it ok to have stainless tied into copper? I noticed a bit of what looked like rust? or corrosion on the stainless...

And also - the cold and hot water is going through the steel braided tubes (sorry - don't know the correct terminology!) and they are looping in the back - looks like they are too long?? I have noticed on occassion that when i turn on the cold water that there's a tiny bit of air that spits out at first... is that because they are looping down?
here's a pic:

Your biggest problem is the way it is plumbed. There is an S-trap. This can cause sewer odor to enter the living space. It needs a P-trap with a vent or an air Admittance Valve (AAV)

it is NOT "stainless" it is chrome plated brass, but regardless there is no problem with mixing materials in a drain, as long as the drain is installed properly, which this one is NOT.

Thanks for both of your input and advice! As far as the vent, i cannot got though the wall as it is brick and attached to another inside room. The drain goes down and is connected the the main stack - where it is sloping - and before the final vertical drop.
So i am a diy'er.... is this something that could be done by someone who is fairly handy - or is it a pro job??
