Difficult hardness problem

I removed a precipitate from my water heater and have tried to dissolve it with vinegar, concentrated acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, and CLR. All dissolved most but left a precipitate that would not dissolve.

Are you trying to plan further cleaning of your water heater, or are you just trying to understand your water better to treat it? ... or curious without an action objective?

I got rocks and sand out of my water heater when I flushed it.

Are you sure it's a precipitate, and not just solid(s) in suspension?
