Creek Pump Controller Sputters & Quits

That's about the size of it: We're using a submersible well pump to get water up to the house here at this upland farm. Right now, what's happening is we run the pump for about three minutes, and then you get a sputtering sound from the controller and the thing quits.

This is after a renter installed a check valve. Any ideas?

Could it be that the sound is coming from the pressure switch?

3 minutes? How big pressure tank? Is the pressure switch very close to the input of the pressure tank? What is the pressure gauge doing during these 3 minutes?
