I have a sta rite vertical pump 1hp deep well. The wires inside are burning up. I've been searching for a new pump and found that there are way more horizontal pumps at a cheaper price. Is it possible to convert my vertical pump to a horizontal pump? Thanks for any help!

If you're talking about the Lowe's and HD pumps they are total junk and probably won't come close to what you have right now. Most horizontal pumps are single stage (one impeller). Your vertical pump is equivalent to a 1.5 HP with two stages that can pump close to 10 gpm with a decent water level or possibly a little more.

If the pump is in good shape buy a new motor and install it.

Be sure to get a shaft seal and new gaskets also.

The Cast Iron 1 HP 2 stage cast iron that HD sells is a decent pump if it is Model # FP4432.

Many of the horizontal are not deep well jet pumps, and are plastic. As Texas Wellman points out.

You will need the correct adapter to run the jet in your well.

Good Luck.

Texas Wellman; That looks like the same motor that the Flotec FP4432 uses. Nice Find for a person that just has a bad motor.

The motor is the worst part about that pump. It is a special item, only AO smith (now century) makes them. It's unique to the pump, and pricey. Also, as I pointed out, with a service factor of 1.65 it is really a 1.5 HP motor in 1-HP guise.

The base of the pump is leaking water, could that be a bad gasket? And could I replace it and stop the leak.

The gaskets should be available.

If it is the rubber one, you may be able to remove it and clean it up and reuse it, If it is not deformed.

Is the leak on the well head Adapter ? Maybe could tighten down the bolts a bit.

Good Luck.

Thanks, going to try and get the new motor today and install it.

You will need a pump gasket set to change the motor. it is best to get a kit that has the ceramic motor shaft seal.

The shaft end has a lock-nut, so that you can adjust the Impellers end play.

Good Luck.
