Ceramic Vs. The Field

My question regards the general quality of ceramic sinks versus other types of sinks, such as metal, granite, aluminum etc. Is it purely a preference thing or are there any type of lasting durability qualities one type of material has over another?

Ceramic/china retains its finish for a long period, but is also more fragile.
