I have a leak on the part shown and Im sure I can fix it. What would typically cause such a leak and are there any parts needed before I take it apart?

Thought that you had that part a part?
Clean the o ring and the track that it is in and the area where the o ring will be touching.
If the o ring looks to be in need of replacement then it should be replaced, the challenge with the current as it is of a type that stands up better to chlorine and other chemicals.
Do not over tighten when putting it back on.
