I changed the lower heating element on my electric water heater. Everything went well until I turned the water on. I now have brown water coming out of the hot water faucets in my house. Is this normal or did I need to change the anode rod as well?

Not at all uncommon to have that happen after turning the water off. It will go away pretty quickly after you run the water ona particular branch.

Same thing that happens when they flush muni water mains.
