quote; My new rig was way user friendly and my first round of tests found no product willing to hold up a single large can of water.

Does that mean that the skyscraper in Dubais which has tile on the outside at the top, is a potential killer, like the windows in the Hancock Center were?

How durable is Ardex Liquid Backer Board to walk on?

I am planning to use RPM mats and warmwire, then Ardex. However, I want to tile the walls first, I'll have to use a step ladder, etc. Should I laydown plywood scraps to protect the Ardex?

Ardex SLC has a compressive strength of around 4,000# once cured...Now, it is pretty hard after just 24-hours, but like any concrete product, takes 28-days to achieve full strength. If your SLC pour is thick enough, you shouldn't have to worry about it. But, it's not a wear surface, so you do want to protect it from dirt, and if you drop something hard on it, you could chip it. If it cracks, you didn't prepare the subfloor properly, or your pour was too thin.

FWIW, once you've fully embedded the fleece, additional thinset thickness should be irrelevant. It could be detrimental, as it would put the tile further away from the weakest point, and bigger levers move more easier. Between the tile and the membrane, there should be at least 1/16", if I remember the spec properly. Industry standards for a fleece type membrane is 50psi minimum, Kerdi typically tests out at 75 or so in the standard test, so for 4sqin, 300#. This is after a full cure, so it's hard to say if you test before that as temperature and humidity play a factor in it.

Typically, the fleece fails before the sheeting and in a shear test, it may be hard to tell whether it was the paper on the drywall or the membrane fleece that started to fail that allows the whole thing to come down.

Pull strength is only important related to the tile weight since you aren't going to be able to grab the tile and pull.
