Replacing a 4 inch corrugated septic drain, that is 130 ft. long. The corrugated pipe goes directly into the septic tank, and I am going to cut it off about a foot from the tank and use PVC for the rest of the line.

Is this product okay for the connection, or is there a better alternative?

4" to 4" coupling

There are some rocks lining the trench from the previous installation... but i thought i might put some more down. If I do, would something like this be appropriate? Or are there better deals buying in bulk somewhere?

Rocks

Also, is there any type of material that I could put under the pipe to prevent roots from penetrating? If so, is this an effective strategy?

Thanks!

No experience myself. Logic tells me that material put under a leach pipe to prevent root is not going to help keep roots out. It may be that something over would. I don't know.

Root-X has a good reputation. In this page https://www.rex-bac-t.com/c-160-roots-in-leach-field.aspx they refer to having one or more cleanouts for the leach field lines.

I don't know how much stone you would want or what kind is appropriate. It seems to me that if you want a cubic foot, HD might be a good source. If you want a cubic yard, bulk stone would be better.

Conditions and rules are local. I suggest what the county suggest, and also see what locals do. What you do in clay vs sand soil would probably vary a lot.

In searching, I ran across this: http://www.wildflower.org/expert/show.php?id=7116 Not so useful, but if you add new plants, it could turn out to be useful.

thanks reach4.

i've got a plan now... using fernco to couple corrugated to PVC and am getting a load of 1 1/2" washed stone to put down under/around/over the pipe.

As far as barriers, does anyone know which of these would be better? One is a sock that goes around the pipe, the other is fabric that wraps around the stone and pipes.

Drain sleeve

Soil Separator

Do they both perform about the same job, or is one better than the other?

thanks

You may want to contact your local Environmental Health Specialist to answer your questions:

Arkansas onsite wastewater rules:

Normally the perforated drain pipe with the sock over it is used in drainage systems that do not use rock. A sock is usually not used over the pipe in a conventional septic trench that is filled with rock. The standard septic trench is three foot wide in NC or in Arkansas it is 24 inches wide and in some areas where the soil is very sandy, some type of material is used to cover the top of the gravel trench. This prevents loose sand from filling the voids between the rocks. I think that is what the trench wrap in your link is used for. It may or may not be required in your area. Very few contractors use gravel in NC anymore. Instead of stone they use polystyrene aggregate. Some use a big plastic chamber system that does not use rock. There is one type of system that uses large diameter pipe that does have a sock but no rock. Tire chips are being used in some areas instead of rock.

Thanks smooky. I guess i'll get the trench wrap... it's cheaper and it keeps the dirt out of the rocks.
