hello, I am new here and trying to finish my basement.

I want to put left over field stone, stone veneer on my bar front and a small part of the wall.

I have finished and painted drywall over both areas. I was going to pull the drywall off the front of the bar and put on 1/4 or 1/2 in. Cement board. Over hang under the bar is an issue, I already only have 9-10 in.

The other area is a wall, 8ft x6.6ft, near an electric fireplace. Should I just attach 1/4 in cement board over the drywall and put the stone veneer on?

Thanks for any help..

In a dry area, unpainted drywall, properly attached to the structure (you have to use more screws than most people do - there are design guides for this to achieve maximum strength and it's actually quite high when done properly), can be fine for installation of tile, or thin stone. FWIW, cbu isn't used because it is stronger, it is used because it isn't affected if it gets wet and because it is stable - drywall is stable unless you soak it. CBU should not be considered in the overall strength of the structure.

How thick is the stuff, and is it all going to be on a vertical wall? Maybe a sketch of what you intended may help people guide you so there are no misunderstandings.

If you are pulling it apart, it's an opportunity moment for properly insulating that part of the foundation wall. Most people don't understand just how large that heat leak (and often air-leak) is. While it's rarely cost-effective to gut a finished basement just to insulate the foundation, now is the time.

Retrofitting foundation insulation has been covered on this forum before, but if you like I can walk you through how to do it without creating a mold-farm.
