Have any plumbers experienced galvanized home pipes rusting in 20 years? Could pipes be bad to start with and need replacing now?

Builders in California stopped using galvanized in the early 70s - some 40+ years ago. Regardless, if your pipes are rusting, replace them with copper pipes.

IMHO, knowing what we know, galvanized should never be used in potable water supplies...ever. It WILL rust. It can last a long time in a closed, heating system because there's not new dissolved oxygen in the water all of the time. In a heating system, what's there when you fill it, rusts things, then if it's properly sealed, it becomes essentially inert, and it stops.
