This model takes the valve with the "twist lock" and not with the (3) lugs which can be tightened slowly compressing the washer in the process. Suggestions as to what I can lubricate the compression washer with that will make assembly easier but not deteriorate the washer material?

I know nothing about that valve, but silicone grease is what you put on rubber to lubricate for a longer period. Do not use a petroleum-based grease.

Another alternative, since it only has to lube for a bit, is liquid soap.

Get a small container of plumber's silicon grease. It will last you a long time. It makes lots of things easier.
