    I think I found it, I'm guessing stem is not the correct word, it's actually a cartridge. The little plastic piece dose does not move in and out but turns to block and unblock the flow of water. The lenght is correct, and the drawing looks about right, should now it a few days...

    I just received a letter from the county water system, they're going to install a new water meter and backflow preventer. They've instructed me to have a thermal expansion device installed, but if I have a water heater made in 2001 or later, it should have one built in to the unit. My questions...
